Celebrations for Saddam's capture

Manchester's Kurdish community celebrated the news perhaps more than anybody else because of the persecution they and their families suffered at the hands of Saddam.

Fazil Jamal Mustafa
, 29, a student from Salford University, Kurdish from Iraq/Sulaimany. Said: "This is very important because he is the key person, everybody is very happy about that. We suffered so much. He used chemical weapons against the Kurdish people and killed about 200,000 people.

"They did not believe in democracy, this is now the chance for Iraqi people to rebuild their country."

Pola Lalo, 36, who is also a member of the Kurdish Association Centre, believes the capture of Saddam draws a line under the old regime.

He said: "People were still afraid that Saddam would come back into power. We just hope this will end the suffering.

"My dreams have come true. I hope Saddam is punished and executed."

A large group of Kurds headed to Rusholme and the Kurdistan Restaurant to celebrate the news. Later they moved to a house in Salford where they were treated to a solo performance by famous Kurdish violinist Hassan Dirzy.

Police 'sorry' for Iraqi Kurd terror revelation

Blaise Tapp

GREATER Manchester Police have apologised for revealing that some of those detained in anti-terror raids last month were of Iraqi Kurdish origin.

The apology was made following a meeting between GMP bosses and representatives of the Kurdish communities in Greater Manchester and the UK on Saturday.

The meeting was organised because of the negative impact the revelations had on the 5,000 Iraqi Kurds who live in the area.

After the meeting Kurdish community representatives and GMP released a statement, which said: "We discussed the negative community implications of the media coverage of the background of those detained being of Iraqi Kurdish origin. The police regret the impact that this has had on the wider Kurdish community.

Intelligence

"We are keen to emphasis that Kurdish community work together with police to tackle crime and improve community cohesion and safety. We accepted that police operations such as this are based on intelligence on individuals and are not targeted at wider communities."

Three weeks ago an estimated 400 officers took part in raids in Greater Manchester, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire arresting 10 people. Following the high profile operation fears circulated that Manchester United's clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford could have been a target for a chemical attack.

Although GMP would not discuss whether Old Trafford was a target the force's assistant chief constable David Whatton confirmed the nine men and one woman they arrested were believed to be of Iraqi Kurd and north African origin.

All 10 were released without charge the following week.

Migrant Voices: Touring in 2004

Migrant Voices explores the real-life experiences of asylum seekers and refugees in twenty-first century Britain – how they got here, why they came, and what they have found here.

Based on in-depth interviews with Iraqi Kurdish refugees and asylum seekers living in Salford, this show combines live music, drama and video to show some of the harsh realities behind the media myths about asylum seekers.

It shows people who have fled their homes to escape torture and persecution only to find themselves the victims of racist abuse and intimidation, with insecure and badly paid jobs and substandard living accommodation. The show draws the link between refugees living in Britain and British intervention in Third World countries and demonstrates powerfully that “they” are here because “we” were there.

Migrant Voices interweaves Middle Eastern and British musical traditions and provides insight into the causes of the global instability that makes people into refugees. It presents an emotionally charged theatrical experience to set audiences thinking about the real reasons why people abandon their homes and families to seek refuge in the west.

EWM says: Despite the shortcomings of the new Piccadilly it is proving effective as a place for public meetings.

ANTI-SADDAM placards have been thrown by Kurdish protesters into a pile next to the Halabja tree. In the background is Piccadilly Plaza and the Sunley office tower. The placard says: 'SADDAM IS A BUTCHER'. The stone in front of the tree is a permanent feature of Piccadilly Gardens and carries the words: 'In memory of the five thousand citizens of Halabja, Kurdistan who were killed in a chemical weapons attack on March 16th 1988'.

EWM says: This could be somewhere in the Middle East, but we are in Piccadilly Gardens Manchester. The Halabja tree provides lasting evidence of the presence of many Kurdish refugees in the Manchester area.

TWO DEMONSTRATIONS, TWO OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS from people with different experiences of life, most of whom have come to live in Manchester from other parts of the UK and the world.

EWM says: Whatever our political persuasion, we should never forget how fortunate we are to live in Manchester, a place where people are free to express their opinions and hold public demonstrations.Manchester is also a place where communities of different origins, religions, beliefs and philosophies live together peacefully. That's something we should all be proud of.

Police said today they regretted the negative impact on the Kurdish community of identifying that some of the terror suspects arrested last month were Iraqi Kurds. Senior officers from Greater Manchester Police met a group of Kurds this afternoon to discuss how issues surrounding the anti-terror raids had affected the community. Following the meeting, held in central Manchester, the group and GMP issued a joint statement.

It said: “Representatives of the Kurdish community from across the country met with senior officers and staff from Greater Manchester Police to discuss the issues arising from the recent operation during which 10 people were detained and subsequently released.

“We discussed the negative community implications of media coverage of the background of those detained being of Iraqi Kurdish origin, including the fact that Greater Manchester Police confirmed those details. “The police regret the impact this has had on the wider community. We are keen to emphasise that the Kurdish community works together with the police to tackle crime and improve community cohesion and safety.”

The statement said police accepted that anti-terrorism operations were based on intelligence about individuals and were not targeted at the wider community. It said positive steps had been agreed upon to improve channels of communication between residents and the police. Other meetings would be held to discuss the matter further. Last month, nine men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism in an operation led by Greater Manchester Police. The operation involved 400 officers, including members of the security services and the Metropolitan Police’s Anti-Terrorist Branch.

Seven of the suspects were arrested in Greater Manchester, and the other three in Staffordshire, South Yorkshire and the West Midlands. The 10 were described by police as being of north African and Iraqi Kurd origin and all were released without charge. Earlier today, two of the suspects, Rebaz Ali and Shadman Sophi, attended the Manchester United game against Chelsea as guests of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association.IMUSA offered the pair tickets for today’s final home game of the season as a “show of solidarity“.

A collection of Manchester United memorabilia in Mr Ali’s flat in the city led to sensational stories of a plot to detonate huge bombs during United’s Premiership encounter with Liverpool on April 24.

The game eventually passed off peacefully amid a huge security presence.

“We are inviting them to the game as our guests because we want to express our solidarity with them as fellow Manchester United supporters,” said IMUSA secretary Andy Walsh.

Mr Ali has spoken of the alarm he felt at his arrest and is still considering whether to take legal action against GMP. He left Iraq for Britain three years ago, claiming his life was at risk. Both his parents, two brothers and two sisters were killed in 1989 by Chemical Ali, one of the most feared men in the regime of deposed tyrant Saddam Hussein.

سروودی نه ورۆز به ئینگلیزی                                                                          Newroz

The New Year's day is today. Newroz is back.
An ancient Kurdish festival, with joy and verdure.

For many years, the flower of our hopes was downtrodden
The fresh rose of spring was the blood of the youth

It was that red colour on the high horizon of Kurd
Which was carrying the happy tidings of dawn to remote and near nations

It was Newroz which imbued the hearts with such a fire
That made the youth receive death with devoted love

Hooray! The sun is shining from the high mountains of homeland
It is the blood of our martyrs which the horizon reflects

It has never happened in the history of any nation
To have the breasts of girls as shields against bullets

Nay. It is not worth crying and mourning for the martyrs of homeland
They die not. They live on in the heart of the nation.
